Montana, our friendly neighbor to the north (the roof to our Wyoming home, if you will!), is a state full of natural, rugged beauty and abundant wildlife. Here are a few interesting facts about the Big Sky State you may not have known:
– The state’s name is derived from the Spanish word “montaña”, which translates into English as “mountain“. – Montana was incorporated as a state in 1889. It was the 41st state to be admitted to the United States.
– The Continental Divide, an invisible line that represents the split between the portions of the country whose rivers drain into the Atlantic from those that drain into the Pacific, runs through Montana. Here is a list of some of the mountain peaks in Montana along the Continental Divide.
– Glacier National Park, located in the northwestern part of the state of Montana, offers over a million acres of gorgeous protected national parkland. According to the park’s website, a visitor has access to 700+ trails, 6 mountains over 10,000 feet in height, active glaciers, and a vast array of wildlife, including wolves, bighorn sheep, grizzly bears, elk, and moose.
– Glacier National Park isn’t the only national park located within the borders of Montana. A portion of Yellowstone National Park extends out from Wyoming into the Treasure State, including the park’s north entrance.
